New Balance Athletics plans to shut down its factory in Boston’s Brighton neighborhood. The move will affect 63 workers effective Feb. 5, 2021, according to a regulatory filing that was recently sent to the Massachusetts labor department. The plant is located in the same neighborhood as the company’s headquarters. The other factory in Lawrence, also in Massachusetts, as well as the three factories in the state of Maine will remain open. Meanwhile, a new “Factory of the Future” in Methuen, on the Massachusetts-New Hampshire border, is still set to open next summer, creating 60 new jobs. The project was planned to start in 2020, but it was delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
