The North Face plans to “phase out and discontinue” the logo it introduced in 2019 for its Futurelight line of apparel and accessories. In January, a graffiti artist in New York working under the name Futura filed a lawsuit in California Central District Court alleging that the VF-owned brand had taken unwarranted inspiration for the logo from his “stylized depiction of an atom.” Futura commented on the matter publicly on Instagram last month. TNF insists that the logo was “conceived and designed by our internal creative team to represent the nanospinning technology used to make Futurelight products” and therefore represents no trademark infringement. It is, however, withdrawing the logo in a “sincere gesture of goodwill” to support “creative artists and their communities.”
