Norwegian sporting chains experienced a 3.5 percent decrease in turnover during the first quarter of 2011, according to their industry association, Sportsbransjen. This dip followed a six-year period of solid growth every quarter for the Norwegian sporting goods industry. The likely reason for this was the early onset of winter this season, which caused Norwegian customers to purchase most of their winter sports equipment before Christmas. In fact, the last quarter of 2010 showed excellent sales results. Increased costs for electricity during the first quarter this year may also have contributed to lower sales. Sportsbransjen has predicted 4 percent sales growth for the sporting goods market during 2011, but this figure may be hard to achieve.
