The results are in for the sneaker auction by Sotheby’s that we previewed earlier in April. The pair of Nike Air Yeezy 1s fetched a record price of $1.8 million. This is about triple the record price of $615,000 previously offered for a pair of Nike Air Jordan 1s that Christie’s put up for sale in August 2020. The seller of the Yeezys was Ryan Chang, co-founder (with Simone Duff) of the media company Applied Arts. The buyer was the sneaker-investment platform Rares of Las Vegas, whose website is already inviting investors to “reserve your spot” to “own a piece of the world’s most valuable shoe.” This particular pair was a prototype worn by Kanye West during his performance at the 2008 Grammy Awards. The model went into production the next year. The American singer, who owns the Yeezy brand name, worked with Nike before switching over to Adidas, whose sales of Yeezy sneakers reportedly generated a turnover of $1.7 billion in 2020.
