OrthoLite has presented O-Therm, a 2mm base-layer thermal foam that the company claims to be the world’s first and only aerogel-infused, open-cell PU foam. The technology creates a thermal barrier that blocks the cold and maintains footwear temperature through the thermal properties of O-Therm’s proprietary aerogel. Unlike conventional aerogel solutions, OrthoLite’s advanced aerogel is a nano-porous element inside of a multi-porous structure, which creates a highly performing barrier that blocks both cold and heat. The proprietary advanced aerogel requires no special handling or encapsulation, which is also a world’s first, according to the company. It is also hydrophobic. OrthoLite worked with Vartest Laboratories, a third-party thermal test lab in New York City, to quantify the thermal performance of O-Therm aerogel insoles under extreme cold conditions (-78°C). The test results showed that O-Therm is 54 percent more effective on average as a breathable thermal barrier in comparative testing than other thermal insoles when tested at -78°C. O-Therm can be combined with top-layer foams to create a custom insole solution for footwear in multiple categories, including outdoor, ski and snowboard, work, casual and fashion. Thanks to its thinness and moldability, O-Therm can also be used as a thermal barrier solution for footwear linings.
