The Supreme Court of California has banned the sale of soccer boots made of kangaroo leather in a suit brought against Adidas, Sport Chalet and a local retailer of soccer products by an animal conservation association, Vegetarians International Voice for Animals (Viva!). Adidas had argued that kangaroo leather should not be banned at the state level because the federal U.S. government has removed kangaroos from its list of endangered species. Making additional claims against Viva!, Adidas has sent the case back to a court of appeals for a final ruling, but in the meantime David Beckham, the new star of the Los Angeles Galaxy team, has reportedly stopped wearing Adidas’ kangaroo leather boots.
