Adidas has recovered the sponsorship of Flamengo, the highly popular football team from Rio de Janeiro, signing a new deal for the next ten years ahead of the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil. The Three Stripes had been the official supplier of the team for 12 years until 1992, when it was replaced by Umbro. Nike took over the sponsorship in 2000. In 2009, Olympikus, the Brazilian sports brand owned by Vulcabras, came in as the team's sponsor, but the company's financial problems probably led to its decision to terminate the contract. Olympikus recently also gave up as the sponsor of the Brazilian Olympic Committee. Eduardo Bandeira de Mello, president of Flamengo, said its relationship with Adidas will help the team to become better known internationally. A couple of years ago, 1.2 million Flamengo shirts were sold in one season alone.
