Kookaburra, the Australian manufacturer of sporting goods, has been developing a smart ball for cricket. A microlight chip embedded in the ball measures the number of revolutions, delivery speed and other pre- and post-bounce data and sends them to an app that runs on smartphones and tablets. The ball is not yet ready for top-tier (Test) cricket matches, but the company hopes within a year to have “a ball that could be tested and used at international level.” It hopes also to have the ball tested by a major Twenty20 league (for matches of short duration) within the year.
