The French market for swimwear, beachwear and related accessories is worth €442 million, according to a study conducted by NPD Group. This was the turnover in 2012, up 2 percent on the previous year, including swimsuits as well as pool sandals, goggles, swim caps and water exercise equipment. The market research company noted dynamic sales for products used to work out in the water, both in swimwear for the swimming pool and in equipment. In contrast, beachwear and leisure swimsuits registered a slight decline. Sales of swimwear grew in volume only in the children's segment, but were flat in the adult segment. Higher growth rates were recorded for sportier one-piece bathing suits for women and board shorts for men. The average price for men's swimwear rose to €22 from €21 in 2011. Sales of goggles rose by 10 percent, due to technological innovation that brought new shapes and models to the market, including larger masks and tinted lenses. Despite attempts to renew the look and features of traditional goggles, the average price remained flat around €12 as pressure from low-price products offset the effect of the price increase driven by technological innovation.
