A Dutch sports retailer, Telstar Sport & Fashion, has taken over the former Hink Sport megastore in Alkmaar, which is about 5,000 square meters, from its receivers. Telstar already has five such megastores and has advanced plans to open two more in Apeldoorn and Groningen. Hink Sport, a prominent member of Intersport Nederland, went bankrupt recently after four decades in operation. It employed 120 people at three Intersport megastores, two regular Intersport stores and one golf store. Sport Partner reported that Hink Sport had attempted to find a buyer but said that bankruptcy became inevitable once a potential investor walked away and bankers turned their back on the retailer. The company was run by Arjen Hink, whose parents started with a small store in 1971. Its flagship outlet was the megastore in Alkmaar. However, the retailer started to suffer when the Dutch economy began to slow down two years ago, and its costs became too heavy for its turnover. Hink's efforts to achieve more sales, by opening more stores and tweaking existing formulas, failed to turn around its financial situation.
