A store manager in Barnstaple, Alex Balacki has been elected as the workers' representative on the board of Sports Direct International (SDI). This was one of the measures announced by the British sports retailer and wholesaler after it came under scrutiny last year, with regard to working practices at its warehouse in Shirebrook and other allegations regarding corporate governance. Balacki is a 30 year-old who started working at SDI as a casual sales assistant on Saturdays, 13 years ago. The group said that Balacki was elected from three candidates who were selected through an internal assessment process. He is due to attend all scheduled meetings of the board in the next 12 months, the first of which is likely to take place later in the spring. A new representative will then be elected each year.
