A total of 7.6 million people were registered at 7,304 fitness clubs in Germany by the end of last year. Out of those, more than 7.22 million were members of clubs measuring more than 200 square meters, up from 7.05 million at the end of 2010 and 5.18 million at the end of 2006. The growth was a little lower than in previous years. The majority of the members, or 73.2 percent of them, are younger than 49 years old, with a 22.7 percent share for those whose age is between 20 and 29 years. Among the clubs, where the McFit chain leads the market with more than 1 million members at 136 locations in Germany, the premium and discount segments are gaining ground at the expense of the medium segment. These and other figures were collected by Deloitte for the German federation of fitness and health centers (DSSV). They were made public at last month's Fibo fair in Essen.
