Adidas is collaborating with Europe’s oldest porcelain manufactory, Meissen, on a very expensive leather sneaker with ceramic overlays. The ZX800 was inspired by Meissen’s “Krater” vase of 1856, with its 130 floral patterns. Of these, 15 were selected for hand-painting on each pair. One pair of the sneakers is being auctioned by Sotheby’s and is projected to draw a bid of $1 million, with the proceeds going toward the Brooklyn Museum’s art education program. In the meantime, the sneakers will be on display at Sotheby’s New York Festival of Wonder exhibition. Their commercial release is slated for late December.
