Adidas is doubling the number of sneakers it makes from ocean plastic this year, expecting to turn out 11 million pairs in cooperation with Parley for the Oceans. Adidas projected sales of about five million pairs of such Parley shoes in 2018, up from one million in 2017. The sporting goods giant has been using recycled polyester derived from recovered ocean waste for a number of years. So far, it has incorporated recycled polyester into jerseys, swimwear, apparel and a range of performance running shoes. The Champions League jersey of the FC Bayern Munich and the outfit of the tennis player Alexander Zverev at the Australian Open are also made with recycled polyester. The 2019 spring/summer edition will consist of 41 percent recycled polyester. Adidas has recently pledged to use only recycled plastic by 2024. In addition, the company has signed the UN Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action and committed to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent by 2030. It has also been supporting Parley in its education and communication programs since 2015 and recently provided the global “Fashion for Good” platform with a donation of €1.5 million – a sum monetarily equivalent to the environmental impact of its transport packaging. “Fashion for Good” promotes the development of innovative and reusable materials within the fashion industry.
