Alibaba is the first e-commerce company to become a member of the International Anticounterfeiting Coalition (IACC), the non-profit organization devoted to combating product counterfeiting and piracy. The Chinese e-tailer has been working with the IACC since 2013 to identify and take down infringing listings on its Taobao and Tmall marketplaces, which reach more than 400 million online shoppers in China. This collaboration has resulted in 5,000 sellers being banned from Alibaba Group's marketplaces and 160,000 product listings being removed. The IACC has 250 members in more than 40 countries that include prominent brands in the electronics, luxury goods and apparel industry, such as Apple, Nike and others. The organization has created a new type of membership for “intermediaries” such as online marketplaces where counterfeits can flourish.
