Speaking to Australian newspaper Sydney Morning Herald (SMH), the head of Amazon Prime Video Australia, Tyler Bern, did not rule out a bid for the broadcast rights to the Olympic Games. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is expected to issue the Australian broadcast partnership tender for the next three Summer and Winter Olympic Games later this year. The next Olympic Games will be held in Paris (2024), Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy (2026), Los Angeles (2028) and in Brisbane, Australia, in 2032. The Australian broadcaster Seven has held the country’s Olympic rights since 2016. The arrival of international streaming services has raised concerns among local broadcasters, explains the Australian newspaper. According to Bern, however, Amazon is not a threat to local broadcasters because “there’s room for everybody to participate in sports rights,” he said, emphasizing the complementarity of the various players in serving Australian customers. Amazon signed its first deal in Australian sports broadcasting in February 2021, when it secured the rights to the swimming trials for the Tokyo Olympics and the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
