Amazon has filed suit against the administrators of some 10,000 Facebook groups, alleging that “in exchange for money or free products” they “attempt to orchestrate fake reviews” on Amazon’s sites in the U.S., the U.K., Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Japan. The e-tailer says it will use any information gleaned from discovery to identify whatever fake reviews and fake-review authors that its own systems, investigators and monitoring have failed to uncover.

Amazon says it employs a staff of more than 12,000 to counter fraud as well as a special team for fake reviews on such social media sites as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and Twitter. These have reported “more than 10,000 fake review groups” to Meta, Facebook’s parent, which has taken down about half.

Among the groups named in the lawsuit is “Amazon Product Review,” which Amazon says had about 43,000 members when, earlier this year, Meta took it down.
