France has bid to host the Winter Olympics in 2030, as many outlets are reporting. As with the recent bid from Switzerland, the host is no single city but, instead, a group of regions coordinating their efforts and presenting a single project. The regions in question are Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Sud/Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur.

France’s competitors are Sweden, the aforementioned Switzerland and Salt Lake City – which, because the summer games of 2028 are scheduled for Los Angeles, would prefer to wait for 2034 but remains open to 2030. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will decide at a meeting to precede the opening ceremony of next year’s Summer Olympics – to be held in Paris, as it happens.

France has hosted the Winter Olympics three times before: in Chamonix (1924), Grenoble (1968) and Albertville (1992).
