Asics Ventures Corporation, an investment subsidiary for Asics, has acquired an unspecified stake in AI Silk Corporation, a Japanese start-up that develops conductive textiles, to make more comfortable wearable technology. Asics says that many devices gathering the body's data from the skin tend to irritate the wearer over time, but AI Silk has developed a proprietary silk textile conductive technology that offers gentle contact with the skin. The fabric is said to be highly absorbent and to cause limited allergic reaction. Asics adds that the fabric permits high conductivity and data gathering. Established in 2015, AI Silk is affiliated with Tohoku University. AI Silk's technology will be used together with the expertise of the Asics Institute of Sport Science, to develop sports apparel made of high-performance materials. The investment fits with one of the strategies outlined in the Asics Growth Plan 2020, which calls for the Japanese company to create distinctive innovations. Asics Ventures was established in November 2016 and AI Silk is its first investment.
