Assosport, the Italian sporting goods industry association, reported at its annual general assembly that the sales of its members had increased by about 8.5 percent last year to reach €3.8 billion, but this is mostly due to new memberships; the sales of existing members inched up by only 1 percent. The association added that the share of exports of its members had increased by 1.5 percentage points, to reach about 41.5 percent of their turnover. Most of the exports still go to the European Union, but Italian companies have also seen growing demand in Russia and China, as well as interest from South Korea. Assosport's president, Luca Businaro, further pointed to potential opportunities in North Africa and the Gulf, on the back of political changes. Separately, Assosport announced that it would be taking part in Dote in Movimento, a government-sponsored plan worth €200,000 to stimulate participation among youngsters aged 6 to 14 years who have no access to sports due to their family's economic situation.
