Base Detall Sport is entering Portugal, according to CMDsport. The Spanish sporting goods purchasing group, founded in Barcelona in 1985 and a former member of Sport 2000 International, has signed a deal with Brands Leaders to clap its banner or that of Wanna Sneakers onto many of the latter’s Portuguese stores and open a few new stores in the country as well – all over the next three years. The deal will raise Base’s stores to a total of about 330, and Brands Leaders will, in turn, become a member of the Base group. Base’s CEO, Toni Maristany, sees the deal as following through on his company’s expansion plan: one of three strategic pillars, the other two being verticalization and digitalization. Base moved into the Iberian peninsula’s third and smallest market, Andorra, about five years ago.
Intersport España has been trying to enter Portugal for years, probably in reaction to the establishment of the Iberian Retail Group.
