Bic Sport saw its turnover decline by around 5 percent at constant currencies in 2017. Sales had already declined at a double-digit rate, in 2016. Bic Sport was founded in 1979 by the Bich family, best known for the Bic pen, out of the family's passion for watersports and expertise in manufacturing. By the late 1980s, Bic Sport came to specialize in windsurf manufacture. During the following 20 years, the company expanded into surf, kayak, junior racing dinghies and most recently, Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP). Last year, Bic Sport acquired Sic Maui (paddle). Paddles today account for 50 percent of its turnover. Société Bic has recently announced the departure of Bruno Bich, the current president and chief executive, effective May 16. Bruno Bich is 72, the age limit set by the company's statutes for those roles. His son Gonzalve, 39, will succeed him at the helm of the group, although he will share the top roles with Pierre Vareille. Gonzalve Bich will take over as the group's chief executive while Vareille will take over as chairman of the board, where he currently serves as vice-president.
