Yardsale, a San Francisco-based ski lifestyle brand, seems to be shaking up the industry with magnetic ski poles designed for recreational skiers. Launched in November 2023, the brand has already achieved 800 percent sales growth in its first year, thanks to a $250,000 investment from Shark Tank’s Kendra Scott and viral success on TikTok. Major retailers like REI, Backcountry and Decathlon have embraced the brand for its user-friendly features and aesthetic appeal.
The P1 and P2 poles use patented magnets to snap together, solving the problem of unwieldy poles while adding convenience. Yardsale’s co-founders, Cristina Ashbaugh and Kelly McGee, developed a process combining injection molding and high-frequency welding to keep the magnets strong even in challenging production conditions.
Yardsale poles are available in multiple sizes and colors and with customizable options, such as a GoPro camera holder. Prices in the US start at $149. The brand has also introduced a magnetic strap (patent pending), eliminating the need for conventional wrist loops to attach them to gloves.
The brand’s focus on “the 90 percent of skiers” who prioritize fun and community over competition is evident in its marketing and product designs. “We’re there to have a good time,” said Ashbaugh.
Yardsale plans to expand its product line into trekking poles, apparel and accessories. The brand is hosting a pop-up store in New York City this month to connect with customers directly while maintaining its strong digital presence.
