Brooks has collaborated with BASF to develop a new running shoe using polyurethane-based cushioning technology. The shoe, which is called Levitate, features a midsole that incorporates a new blend of BASF's Elastopan Sports Light polyurethane system. According to Brooks, this technology offers enhanced comfort and durability, while providing the user with 72 percent energy return from each stride. This is made possible by a cushioning material that reduces the amount of energy the wearer expends when running. The material is designed to expand as the wearer's foot hits the ground, so as to return more energy when force is applied. In addition, compared with traditional midsole materials such as ethylene-vinyl-acetate, BASF's polyurethane formulation is said to improve the ability of the midsole to retain its original thickness. The new Brooks Levitate running shoes will be available starting Sept. 30.
