As reported by 1st Blue, German yoga wear brand Wellicious has launched its first “Cradle-to-Cradle Certified Yoga Collection” – compostable yoga wear – after six years of research into sustainable materials. The elasticity of the Wellicious fabrics, which is necessary for yoga, comes from a new type of biodegradable elastane, the only one classified as “non-ecotoxic” by the Hohenstein Institute. According to the label, the cotton balls are obtained in an ethically safe manner and processed into yarn and fabric in compliance with strict quality standards. When a garment in the collection has reached the end of its life, it can be decomposed into organic nutrients. It can then be recycled to grow new materials, such as cotton. At the same time, the materials are durable and breathable during wear, according to the manufacturer. Since founding her brand Wellicious in 2007, Heike Petersen Cunza has aimed to shake up the fashion industry. She says that sustainability should not be a trend, but a theme throughout one’s life and should always encourage people to rethink and adapt their buying behavior and entrenched habits.
