A massive fire and explosion occurred on Sept. 22 in a factory at the Pingtung Technology Industrial Park in Pingtung County, Southern Taiwan, which produces golf balls for major brands. The fire reportedly killed nine people, including four firefighters, while more than 80 people were taken to the hospital, as reported by local authorities. Around 600 jobs are now also at risk. The factory, operated by Launch Technologies Inc., shipped 260 million golf balls last year, one-fifth of the global annual golf ball supply. The causes of the fire remain unclear. The factory fire is expected to affect major golf brands, including Callaway, TaylorMade, Bridgestone, Mizuno and Wilson, according to GolfMagic.
