A local court has lifted Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof’s protection from its creditors, which it had granted in April to the Austrian-owned operator of the Karstadt Sports chain and the Galeria Kaufhof and Karstadt department stores. The move follows a recent settlement with the group’s creditors and the renegotiation of leases with the landlords of many stores that were going to be shut down. Meanwhile, Engelbert Thulfaut, formerly sales director of Peek & Cloppenburg (P&C), has been appointed as GKK’s new chief executive, joining Dirk Lessing and Karin Busnel-Knappertsbusch on the company’s executive board. Lessing acts as chief operating officer while Busnel-Knappertsbusch handles category management.
