The Wanda Sports Group has announced that the company has completed the sale of The Ironman Group to Advance, a family-owned business that owns and invests in companies across media, entertainment, technology, communications, education and other sectors. The transaction was first announced in March. Advance’s portfolio includes Condé Nast, Advance Local and Stage Entertainment, among other companies. Orkila Capital, a growth equity firm, partnered with Advance as a co-investor in the transaction. In connection with the sale, Andrew Messick has resigned with immediate effect from his position as director of Wanda Sports and will continue as chief executive of The Ironman Group. The Ironman Group operates a global portfolio of events that includes the Ironman Triathlon Series, the Ironman 70.3 Triathlon Series, 5150 Triathlon Series, the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series, Ironkids, the Epic Mountain Bike Series, and other multi-sport races. The Ironman brand was established in 1978 as a single race, and has since grown into the Ironman Series of events, which is the largest participation sports platform in the world, with more than 235 events across over 50 countries.
