Zalando has acquired Fision, the Swiss producer of a body-scanning app and virtual dressing room. The Swiss company’s system creates 3D virtual bodies and clothing models on a platform called meepl. The Berlin-based European e-tailer already uses customer histories on purchases and returns to generate advice on sizes for 50 percent of all items ordered. Fision’s systems will add body measurements, supplementing Zalando’s existing garment measurements. The change has benefits for Zalando as well as for its customers, as it should enable the company to match its assortment to the customer base. In the words of its director of engineering for size and fit, Stacia Carr, “we can create a feedback loop between brands and consumers.” Not only will Fision be retaining its headquarters in Zurich, but Zalando hopes to establish a tech hub there, raising the site’s headcount to beyond 150.
