To celebrate Go Skateboarding Day (June 21), Vans has set up a partnership with Skateistan, a non-profit organization that promotes skateboarding and education in Afghanistan, Cambodia and South Africa. On July 6, the company and the NGO will be launching a video campaign – titled Where It Starts and available at Vans.com/skateistan – that reviews skateboarding’s history and terrain (streets, pools, skateparks) and interviews some of its stars, among them Tony Hawk, Lizzie Armanto and Pedro Barros. To support Skateistan, Vans will be donating up to $200,000 to the Tides Foundation, setting aside $10 from every pair of Vans Custom Skate Classics purchased on Vans.com/customs from June 21 to Aug. 30. Vans’ global senior director of action sports, Bobby Gascon, notes that “unlike traditional sports where athletes are aided with scholarships and various government programs, skateboarding requires support at ground zero – within its communities.” In addition, Skateistan has made a point of helping girls, the disabled and the poor, with help from another skateboarding NGO, The Goodpush Alliance.
