Decathlon and the German Development Agency (GIZ – Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit) will be collaborating this year on two joint initiatives to reduce the environmental impact of Vietnam’s garment and textile factories. The two joint projects are “Climate Protection through Sustainable Bioenergy Markets in Vietnam” (GIZ BEM) and “Fostering and Advancing Sustainable Business and Responsible Industrial Practices in the Clothing Industry in Asia” (GIZ FABRIC). The GIZ BEM project focuses on helping Decathlon’s Vietnamese suppliers to replace coal consumption with sustainable biomass. It will provide Decathlon with technical guidance on improving plant boiler efficiency, identifying sustainable solutions for biomass supply, the open access to biomass markets for factories, and mapping out a practical supply of biomass resources. The GIZ FABRIC project will offer free e-learning courses and other training tools, which combine capacity-building measures and advisory services, to train Decathlon’s suppliers. The Climate Action Training and Chemical Management Training, both of which provided via the e-learning platform www.atingi.org, will offer basic knowledge on climate change, greenhouse gas accounting, reduction solutions in the area of energy efficiency and renewable energy, and sustainable chemical management systems.
