Decathlon will open two new stores in Munich in the course of next year. The French sporting goods retail chain already has one store in the Bavarian capital. Decathlon aimed to open no less than 13 new stores in Germany before the end of the year, building on its current strong portfolio of 53 locations in the country. It has already opened three German stores this year. The pace of new openings in Germany has risen from 11 in 2016 and 14 in 2017. Two of the new stores opened in Cologne. The others occupy a combination of urban and suburban locations in Bielefeld, Braunschweig, Dodenhofen, Dresden, Dortmund, Koblenz, Leipzig, Lörrach, Ludwigsburg, Magdeburg and Hamburg, creating about 350 new jobs. The choice of the cities follows a four-month, social-network survey of 5,773 German consumers conducted by Decathlon this spring to determine the actual demand for physical stores to supplement the company's growing e-commerce operations in the country.
