December retail figures in Sweden show that Christmas sales were record-setting for the second year in a row throughout the retail sector. However, the good news does not extend to the sale of sporting goods. According to Hui Research, sporting goods sales increased by a moderate 0.9 percent compared to the same month last year. One major reason was a buying spree during the Black Friday promotions in November, which is reportedly leading many within the industry to argue that sporting goods retailers need to have a discussion on whether or not to participate at all. For all of 2017, sporting goods sales showed a weak increase of just 0.2 percent when compared with 2016, compared with a 2.4 percent increase across all retail sectors.
