El Corte Inglés has started to offer home delivery within two hours for items ordered through its website. The service is limited for the moment to the cities of Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Málaga, Sevilla and Bilbao. The initiative is regarded as a pre-emptive move against Amazon, which is reportedly considering the establishment of a distribution center for southern Europe in Barcelona. The e-shop of the Spanish department store organization, which is also a major player in the sporting goods market, enjoyed a 60 percent increase in the value of transactions in the weeks preceding Christmas as compared to a year ago.
