In an effort to avoid an impending proxy challenge by institutional investors supporting ousted CEO Glenn Chamandy, the Board of Directors of Canadian sportswear brand Gildan Activewear has accelerated the appointment of his successor, Vince Tyra. Instead of Feb. 12, as announced in December, Tyra has now taken over as the new President and CEO on Jan. 15. Board member Craig Leavitt acted as Interim President since Chamandy’s departure.

Tyra has a long career in the apparel sector, including as CEO of apparel distributor Broder Bros. and as President of Fruit of the Loom prior to its sale to Berkshire Hathaway. Most recently, he led corporate strategy for Houchens Industries, a $4 billion revenue employee-owned holding company.
