Frasers Group subsidiary Frasers Group Asia Sdn Bhd (FGA) will bring Sports Direct to Indonesia via a joint venture with local retailer PT MAP Active, which acquired Foot Locker stores in Singapore and Malaysia earlier this year. The British company said the collaboration is the first step in a regional expansion ”between two industry-leading retail companies.” The expansion into Indonesia will make some brands belonging to Frasers Group available to Indonesian consumers for the first time, including Karrimor, Everlast, Lonsdale, Slazenger, USA Pro and Firetrap. To be covered are all major categories, including soccer, running, training, outdoor, racket, swimming and leisure.
Michael Murray, CEO of Frasers Group, said that the partnership is part of the group’s international expansion strategy, which follows the “success of our existing business in Malaysia,” where it currently has 35 retail stores. “The Indonesian market offers an exciting opportunity to highlight our brands, to the fourth largest population in the world,” added Paul Gibbons, MD of FGA. “We enter this partnership with a long-term view to build the best multi-sport destination, which has been a great success in the UK.”
