A representative study by the German Industry Association for Fitness and Health (DFIG) has found that home fitness continues to be a growth market in Germany. The Covid-19 pandemic has boosted the market, and this trend continues. The survey shows that:

  • 50 percent of households in Germany purchased fitness equipment in 2021
  • 70 percent of households already own home fitness equipment (this includes small fitness equipment like TRX, strength equipment like dumbbells and cardio trainers like cross trainers)
  • Around 30 percent of respondents from the representative study plan to purchase at least one piece of fitness equipment in 2022
  • Apps are used by 20 percent for motivation, and almost 40 percent watch TV or series for motivation during training
  • The main goal of training: improving/maintaining one’s own health (82 percent), followed by the fitness aspect; this is important for 75 percent

A closer look at the purchase intentions for 2022 shows that many people who train at home are planning to expand their home gym extensively and give the equipment the space it needs in their living rooms. Thus, 18 percent of the respondents say they are interested in buying a treadmill. One in four is thinking about investing in dumbbells in 2022. This means that dumbbells are even more popular than resistance/terra bands (19.4 percent). Last year, the latter still had the highest purchase interest.
