Harbinger, a U.S. supplier of performance strength and fitness accessories, has been acquired by Implus, a multi-brand company specializing in athletic, fitness and outdoor products. Established in 1988, Harbinger supplies a wide range of products such as gloves, belts, straps, strength training aids and functional fitness items. Implus, which has been growing through a spate of acquisitions in the last years, is already active in the fitness market with the Perfect Fitness range of exercise accessories and Trigger Point wellness and recovery products. Implus said the acquisition would enable it to grow its customer base and become one of the leaders in the health and fitness markets. Harbinger's founder, David McCrane, is a former skateboarder who got started with a wrist-stabilizing glove, the Wrist Wrap. Harbinger has since built up a range of more than 75 products sold through sports and fitness retailers, with particular strength in workout gloves and wraps as well as weight belts. McCrane said the deal with Implus would give it the resources to continue expanding in both product and distribution. Implus is majority-owned by Berkshire Partners, a Boston-based investment firm.
