Herman van Beveren, chief executive of Decathlon in Belgium, told the Belgian newspaper Le Soir that the French retailer could expand by another 40 stores in the small country. Decathlon has already reformed the Belgian sports retail landscape in the last years by expanding to 23 stores. The latest store, in Evere, is one of the largest in Europe with a surface of 9,000 square meters. Charleroi, Doornik, Oostende and Sint-Truiden were mentioned as targets for the next openings. Among the 40 new stores, Van Beveren reportedly envisages the opening of 30 large stores, covering at least 4,000 square meters, and 15 smaller stores of about 1,200 square meters.
