His name is a catch cry in handball where it describes both a trick feint and a handball-specific sports brand, but he himself will hear it called out in stadiums no more. Bernhard Kempa, “Monsieur Handball” to some, died on July 20 at the age of 96. Kempa was a world champion in field handball in 1952 and 1955. He later led his local team, Frisch Auf Göppingen, to several national German titles as both a player and trainer. Uhlsport has been marketing its own line of handball gear under the Kempa brand name since 2002.
