Icon Health & Fitness is launching a partnership with Nike and Apple that will make it possible for runners exercising on their home treadmills to take part in the Nike+ community. The Nike+ program enables runners to measure their performance through a chip inserted in a pair of Nike shoes and to transfer the information to an online platform – forming a virtual running community in which runners share their experiences and compete against each other. However, the chip is not adapted to adequately record running sessions on a treadmill. Through the new partnership, users of specially adjusted Proform treadmills will be able to share in the community by placing an iPod on the console of their treadmill, and then transferring the data to their computer. The special treadmill, which Icon regards as a statement of continued high-profile innovation, will be launched worldwide in September.
