India's government says that it will invest 2 billion rupees (€31.4m-$42.7m) in a five-year project aimed at helping its technical textiles industry. This ?Technology Mission? runs through 2015, and will include four new centers of excellence for specialty materials. The first phase of the project is to revamp the country's specifications and standards, and set up its own testing facilities with international accreditation. India will also spend INR 250 million (€3.9m-$5.3m) on each of the four centers of excellence, which will focus on nonwovens and composite fabrics. They will also concentrate on the ?sportech? segment, comprising technical textiles for athletic shoes and sports equipment. The second phase will be dedicated to developing domestic and export markets for Indian technical textiles firms.
