Indonesian press reports indicate that a Chinese company has invested in the construction of a shoe factory with a capacity of 15 million pairs to manufacture footwear for Nike. Established in Garut, West Java, the factory is to provide employment for 5,500 people. The Indonesian trade ministry reports that the country's footwear exports reached $4.1 billion last year, which was an increase of 6.4 percent. The target has been set at $4.5 billion this year, on the back of growing demand from countries such as Nigeria, Ethiopia, Kenya, India and Pakistan.
