Gianni Infantino has been elected FIFA president for the third time overall and will thus remain in office for another four years. The vote was held by acclamation at the BK Arena in Kigali, the Rwandan capital, meaning delegates showed their approval by applauding. Infantino was the only candidate. The German, Swedish and Norwegian football federations had announced before the election that they would withhold their support for the controversial president, but Infantino was backed and celebrated by the vast majority of FIFA’s 211 national associations. Under his leadership, FIFA has achieved great economic success since Infantino took over from Joseph Blatter in early 2016. Revenues are expected to reach no less than $11 billion by 2026.
