Hugo Laumann, a German manager dedicated to the promotion of traditional small and medium-sized independent sporting goods retailers, passed away on April 30 at the age of 92. As its general manager, he helped build up the German sporting goods retailers’ association, VDS, into an organization whose strong voice was heard and much respected by the German public and by urban planning authorities. Highlights of his achievements include his contribution to the foundation and expansion of the industry’s major buying groups, Intersport and Sport 2000. He collaborated in the transfer of the German sporting goods trade show from Wiesbaden to Munich in 1970, which set the stage to turn ISPO into the world’s largest event in the sector. He also made a major contribution to the creation of FEDAS, the European sporting goods retailers’ federation.
