In 2022, 91 percent of people aged 16 to 74 in the European Union used the Internet, according to data from the latest annual survey on the use of ICT in households and by individuals, released by Eurostat. The proportion of e-shoppers jumped from 55 percent in 2012 to 75 percent in 2022.

The highest shares of e-commerce users who bought or ordered goods or services over the Internet in 2022 were recorded in the Netherlands (92%), Denmark (90%) and Ireland (89%). Between 2012 and 2022, the growth was particularly significant in Estonia (+47%), Hungary (+43%), Czechia and Romania (+41%).

In 2022, the most common online purchases of goods were “Clothes, shoes or accessories” (which includes sporting goods), ordered by 42 percent of internet users. The other most common online purchases in the top 5 were: “Deliveries from restaurants” (19%), “Cosmetics, beauty or wellness products” (17%), “Furniture, home accessories or gardening products” (16%), then “Books, magazines or newspapers” and “Sports goods” (excluding sports clothing), both at 14 percent.
