Intersport France is investing an additional €6 million in Manufacture Française du Cycle, its own bike factory at Machecoul, in western France. Intersport took over the plant from Cycleurope in 2013 and since then it has invested more than €10 million in the facility, according to Usine Nouvelle, a French business publication. Intersport has now bought two industrial plots adjacent to the current facility, where a logistics center will be built. The Machecoul facility produced 131,000 bikes in 2013, the year of the takeover. Production rose to 245,000 units in 2014, of which were for 40-50 percent for Intersport and the rest for other clients including Go Sport, Sport 2000 and supermarket chains like Auchan, Leclerc, Cora, Casino, and Intermarché. The higher production levels are attributed to a larger quantity of bikes sold under Intersport's private label, Nakamura, which were previously made in Bulgaria, Italy and Portugal. In September, the factory shall start delivering its own Sunn brand of bikes, which targets independent bicycle dealers in France. The Sunn ranges will include electric bikes, mountain-bikes and BMX, with more ranges to follow.
