Following last week’s appointment of Michael Armstrong as the company’s first global managing director to further drive the group’s growth and achieve its goal of becoming the “leading global sports-fashion powerhouse,” JD Sports has appointed Angela Luger and Darren Shapland to the board as non-executive directors. Luger will join the sports retailer’s remuneration committee, and Shapland will take a position on the audit and risk committee. Both will begin their assignments on June 1, 2023.
Luger has extensive experience in digital commerce, digital transformation and marketing across a range of companies, including Cadbury’s and Coca-Cola. She was previously at the helm of The Original Factory Shop, N Brown Group and before that, managing director of Debenhams. She was recently appointed non-executive director of Jet2 and currently sits on the boards of New Look, ScS and Portmeirion.
Shapland has been involved in retail and consumer businesses for 35 years, both as an executive and non-executive director. His past roles include chairman of Carpetright and chief financial officer at Sainsbury’s. Shapland is currently chairman of Topps Tiles and has also served as non-executive chairman and audit chairman at companies including Poundland, Ferguson and Ladbrokes.
