Johnson Health Tech (JHT), the Taiwanese fitness equipment maker that owns the Matrix, Vision and Horizon brands, has acquired Stak Fitness, a leading distributor of fitness gear in Canada. It will operate as a separate subsidiary for JHT, with current management and staff. Established in 2004 by Karim Toupin-Chaieb, Stak Fitness has relationships with thousands of gyms and other fitness-related organizations in Canada through its distribution of several brands of fitness gear, such as Total Gym and Escape Fitness. Upon the acquisition, Stak Fitness became the exclusive Canadian distributor for Matrix, JHT's commercial fitness brand – ending a previous distribution agreement with Precor. Two Canadian sales representatives for Matrix joined Stak Fitness, which has its head office and warehouse in Montreal, and another office in Toronto. JHT says the deal will substantially increase its distribution reach in Canada's commercial fitness market. The deal comes amid increased merger activity in the fitness market in the recent months.
