Karstadt is planning to open two more sports stores this year, after its recent new opening in Wiesbaden, and to add eight to ten new ones in the next three to four years, according to TextilWirtschaft. The well-informed German magazine also indicates that Karstadt Sports' 27 existing stores saw their revenues decline by 5 percent last year, but the new year has started out strongly. Meanwhile, Andrew Jennings, the new British chief executive of Karstadt, has told Financial Times Deutschland (FTD), that the department store chain is serious about narrowing down the range of products it offers by eliminating segments such as electronics and reducing its fashion offerings by up to 20 percent. While Jennings did not say much about sporting goods in particular, he said he would be checking out the profitability of each brand.
